5 March: AFC Caversham Hurricanes U17 2 Ashridge Park Royals U17 5
After 2 disappointing defeats we faced a tricky looking encounter with an impressive AFC Caversham team. With the squad down to its bare bones of the mere starting 11, many of whom were still shaking off the after-effects of a lively Friday evening, and a vast muddy undulating pitch, we were fearing a tough morning.
The home team attacked from the off, but within 2 minutes, Ashridge took the lead with Ted converting a parried save from Alex’s shot. On 8 minutes, the advantage was doubled with Ben W scoring direct from a corner for around the 5th time this season.
Ted scored his 2nd goal, after a header by Alex on 28 minutes, and then on 40 minutes Alex put the Royals into an an unassailable lead with a header after Ben C’s tremendous accurate free-kick was clawed away by the keeper.
The team tried in the 2nd half in the energy-sapping conditions. The home team reduced the arrears on the hour mark, shortly after Ted had hit the bar, but then Ted completed his hat-trick with a fine header from Ben Waring’s inch-perfect cross.
AFC Caversham did not give up, and they managed to score a 2nd goal with 8 minutes remaining.
Overall an enjoyable game played in a good spirit in challenging conditions. Just 3 games to go to preserve our runners-up position.
