Caversham Trent Whites 0 Ashridge Park Royals 4
On a chilly autumn morning we made our first ever visit to Caversham to play Caversham Trents, a team that had just joined the League after playing the past few seasons in the Berkshire Youth Development League.
The early minutes of the game were relatively uneventful, before a long lofted ball from James on 12 minutes set Alex free, who beat the keeper to open his account for the day. 4 minutes later a corner from Ben W landed on a sixpence allowing James to sidefoot the ball into the goal to double the lead.
It was difficult to establish a consistent pattern of play in what was turning into a somewhat tetchy affair- the one highlight was when Dan was unfortunate to shoot wide after good work from Alex just before the break.
The home team started the second half strongly and were unfortunate to shoot over the bar on 50 minutes, but Ashridge gradually took back the initiative, before being fortunate to increase their lead on 61 minutes, when a lofted back-pass eluded the luckless custodian, who was unable to handle the ball, and instead watched on helplessly as Alex gleefully smashed the ball into the empty net.
4 minutes later Dan was fouled in the box, but Ted’s well struck penalty was well saved to the keeper’s right, giving the hosts a brief boost.
The game fizzled out, until with 3 minutes left, Ben C picked up the ball just outside the Ashridge box before proceeding to run the full length of the pitch and then unleashing an 18 yard unstoppable drive beyond the reach of the keeper into the top corner of the goal. A very early contender for goal of the season, and a move out of context in what was in all honesty a niggly affair and one that will not live long in the memory.
Next up, League Leaders Reading Rangers will be coming to St Crispins.
