Twyford Comets 1 Ashridge Park Royals 5
We travelled to near-neighbours Twyford Comets for what was surprisingly, our first ever League encounter, in this, our opening game of the 2015/16 season. There was a full complement of players, and with 7 goals scored in our 2 pre-season games, hopes were high.
Ashridge started the game with no little purpose. Sid was everywhere, coming close to breaking the deadlock on 2 or 3 occasions. Ben W hit the bar after good play from Dom, and when Alex came on he was unfortunate to be adjudged offside from Ted’s defence-splitting pass. Alex then came close on 38 minutes when he was foiled by the keeper after a one-on-one. Encouragingly, Ashridge were playing as a team and there were moments of high quality with the ball fizzing from player to player. However just before the break Twyford came back into the game and came close to scoring from a corner.
At half time, it was agreed that the past few minutes had been something of a wake-up call, and it would be a pity to see much good play going to waste. The message was that we needed to be more clinical in front of goal.
The breakthrough eventually came from a slightly surprising source; Ben W scored direct from a corner which swerved into the roof of the net on 51 minutes.
6 minutes later, the energetic Ted was set clear by Charlie’s through ball and then beat the on-rushing keeper with a delicate lob. The following minute, some more Ted magic set up Alex for his debut goal, the first of many, we hope! On 80 minutes, James headed in Ben C’s corner, and then within 90 seconds Luke’s through-ball set up Sid, who converted the chance with aplomb, a just reward for his industrious performance.
There was time for the opponents to score a consolation goal after good work down their right hand side. Overall, Ashridge can be pleased with their day’s work, and richly deserved their victory in a hard fought but sportingly contested encounter.
